Author of God in the Gallery at Dordt Sept. 21

September 11, 2009

Art historian, curator, and author Dan Siedell will present a public lecture at Dordt College on Monday, Sept. 21, at 4:30 p.m. in the Science and Technology Center lecture hall S101.

Siedell’s illustrated discussion will be based on his book, God in the Gallery, A Christian Embrace of Modern Art. He examines the role of visual art in worship and Christian experience, drawing upon thinkers such as Francis Schaeffer and David Naugle to construct a framework for interpreting modern art. Siedell draws upon art by Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Enrique Martinez Celaya, and others to illustrate his contentions.

"Having read Dan’s book and heard him speak, I am excited for the opportunity to bring him to campus,” commented Matthew Drissell, instructor of art at Dordt College. “He offers a very unique perspective as a Christian who is a relevant and insightful art critic and scholar. He is a compelling speaker as he addresses both the secular and Christian contemporary art world with a thoughtful and significant Christian faith. His insights will certainly inspire our students to strive for new creative and profound works that honor God and challenge the viewer.”

In addition to the public forum, Siedell will talk with Dordt art majors about a career in the arts, lead a question and answer time with a painting class, and participate in a round table discussion with students in the Kuyper Scholars Program.
