Men's Relay Earns All-American Status

May 22, 2009

Outdoor TrackThe Dordt College men's 4 x 800 meter relay team earned NAIA All-American status with a sixth place finish at the NAIA National Meet held in Edwardsville, Illinois on Friday, May 22.

The Defenders ran a 7:36.66 to claim sixth place. Brent Van Schepen (Junior; Edgerton, Minnesota) ran the opening leg and handed off to David Christensen (Junior; Waconia, Minnesota). Mark Eekhoff (Junior; Manhattan, Montana) ran the third leg with Josiah Luttjeboer (Sophomore; Belleville, Ontario) brought the baton around for the anchor leg.

"All four ran great," said Dordt coach Craig Heynen. "I'm happy that they could earn sixth and All-American status."

Luttjeboer ran in the 800 meter event three hours earlier and didn't qualify for the finals in the event with a 2:00.25. The time was inflated after Luttjeboer eased up when it was clear he would not qualify for the finals.

Josiah wasn't feeling well in that race and didn't use everything up. For him to come back and run a 1:54 in his fourth 800 meter run in two days was huge," said Heynen.

Oklahoma Baptist won the event in a time of 7:26.33 with the top three finishers going sub-7:30.00. The top-four finishers all beat last year's winning time in the event.
