Dordt College Ag Day is April 24
April 17, 2009
Ag Day at Dordt College is Friday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is hosted by the Agriculture Club and Agriculture Department. Displays will be set up in the main parking lot on the north side of the Campus Center (weather permitting).
Free activities include a petting zoo with a variety of livestock, department presentations, class posters, and games. There will also be a large display of farm equipment from dealerships in the area, with some dealers available to answer questions.
Contests held throughout the day include guessing the price of the machinery and a hay throwing contest.
Registered high school and college teams will judge livestock at 10:30 a.m., with additional relays, quizzes, and games scheduled throughout the day.
Ag students will serve hamburgers, pork-burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, ice cream, and milk from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., as a fund-raiser for Ag Club activities in the upcoming year.
At 1:30 p.m. the Iowa Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Karey Claghorn, will speak in the Campus Center. Claghorn was appointed deputy secretary in 2007, and has traveled world-wide to learn more about different farming practices and see the importance of trade to agriculture. She most recently has traveled to the Asian countries of China, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Philippines with beef and pork producers.
She lives on a farm in rural Warren County, where together with her husband Alan they produce hay, have a small cow-calf operation, and are actively involved in raising thoroughbreds.
The Ag Club invites the public to attend this free event as they support the future of agriculture and celebrate Dordt College’s growing agricultural program.
