“Serving Others in Vocation and Calling” will be the topic of Dr. Herma Williams, who will be a guest speaker at Dordt College Friday, April 17, at 2 p.m. in the Science Building lecture hall S101.

Dr. Williams is the provost and academic vice-president at Fresno Pacific University, a Mennonite Brethren Institution. The author of a book about multicultural awareness in education, Williams is committed to faculty scholarship and student research.

Dr. Williams came to FPU from Gordon College in Wenham, Mass. During her time as Gordon College’s associate provost, the college grew from 1,270 students to over 1,700, while becoming more diverse and raising entrance standards. Williams helped build enrollments of under-represented students and recruited a more diverse faculty, helping Gordon College earn the Council of Christian Colleges and University’s Racial Harmony Award.

Williams earned her B.A. and M.A. from Southern Illinois University and her Ph.D. from Iowa State University. She also completed post-doctoral studies at Harvard University and was named a Kellogg Foundation and Ford Foundation fellow. As a Fulbright Scholar, she directed a program to strengthen academic excellence at two universities in South Africa.
