Purple Martin writing awards

Fifteen Dordt College students were recently recognized for their writing ability in the annual Purple Martin Writing contest sponsored by the college’s English department.
Awards were presented on Monday, April 6, at the Humble Bean. Cash prizes were awarded for first and second place.
Students who received first place, second place or honorary mention were:
Personal Writing, upperclass: first place, Robert Minto, Queen Creek, AZ; second place, Rachel De Smith, Sioux Center, IA. Freshmen: first place, Kari Van Beek, Sanborn, IA.
Exposition, upperclass: first place, Matt Gerrelts, Waterloo, IA; second place, Megan De Groot, Sunnyside, WA; honorable mention, Adrianna Oudman, Wheatfield, IN, and Becca Hengeveld, Sheldon, IA. Freshmen: first place Dalton Moore, Northfield, MN.
Poetry: first place, Jessica Klopstra, Lacombe, AB; second place, Adrian deLange, Aylmer. ON; honorable mention, Jenna Veenbaas, Abbotsford, BC, and Robert Minto.
Fiction: first place, Robert Minto; second place, Joel Veldkamp, Cumming, IA; honorable mention, Becca Van Schepen, Sioux Center.
Literary Analysis: first place, Adrian De Lange; second place, Rachel De Smith; honorable mention, Adrianna Oudman. Freshmen: first place, Vanessa Theel, Fond du Lac, WI.
Persuasion: first place, Robert Minto; second place, Matt Gerrelts.
The Dordt English Department offers emphases in literature and writing within the general major, as well as minors in writing and literature.
