Helena van Beek, Sioux Center, and Andrew Friend, Zillah, WA, will present a piano and organ recital at Dordt College, Saturday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the B. J. Haan Auditorium.

Helena van Beek is a junior majoring in piano performance and pedagogy. She is the daughter of Leendert and Soyen van Beek, Sioux Center.

Helena is currently accompanist for the Dordt College Concert Choir, Siouxland Boys Choir, and for a church choir. She has also been a pianist for community musical pit orchestras, is church organist at First CRC in Sioux Center, and often accompanies soloists or ensembles. Her piano instructor at Dordt is Norma Snyder Jones.

Her portion of the program includes Bach’s “Prelude and Fugue V in D Major, BWV 850”, Mozart’s “Sonata No. 12 in F Major, K. 332”, Khachaturian’s “Toccata”, and Chopin’s “Grande valse brillante”, which van Beek says is a lively and joyful piece written by the composer during one of his stays in Vienna.

Andrew Friend is a senior majoring in mechanical engineering. He is the son of Duane and Cheryl Friend, Zillah, WA.

Both van Beek and Friend have been awarded several music scholarships while attending Dordt College. Friend’s organ instructor at Dordt is Matthew Geerlins.

His portion of the program includes selections by Bach and Sweelinck, as well as Joplin’s “Peacherine Rag”, and Vierne’s “Symphony #1: Final” which showcases the full range of Dordt’s impressive 57-rank, 37-stop Casavant pipe organ.

A reception will be held following the performance. The public is cordially invited to attend.
