Dordt College Names Athletic Director

Bouma(Wednesday, February 25; Sioux Center, Iowa) Dr. Erik Hoekstra, Dordt College Provost, has announced Glenn Bouma has agreed to serve as Dordt College Athletic Director effective June 1, 2009.

Bouma, currently the Dordt College Recreation Center Director and Campus Event Coordinator, has a long history of work experience in athletics. Bouma coached the Dordt College women’s basketball team for six seasons from 2001-2007 and has been in the position of Recreation Center Director since 1997. Prior to his time at Dordt College Bouma was the Athletic Director at Unity Christian High School for 20 years and also coached baseball, cross country, track and basketball at the Orange City, Iowa school. While at Unity he taught several business and physical education classes.

“Glenn Bouma has been an outstanding leader on our campus in meeting the highest standard of professional performance as infused by Christian character and biblical principles,” said Dordt College President Dr. Carl Zylstra. “He'll do a tremendous job of moving Defender athletics forward in keeping with the foundational values of Dordt College.”

Bouma has served as an officer with the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association and the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association and is a member of the Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame. He is a charter member and officer of the Northern Plains Board of Volleyball Officials and is the current assigner of volleyball officials in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

“I look forward to the challenge of serving as Dordt College Athletic Director,” says Bouma. “The challenge of continuing to build on the foundation that is in place is very exciting for me.”

Rick Vander Berg, Dordt College’s current Athletic Director, will retire at the conclusion of the 2008-2009 school year after working in the Athletic Department since 1977.
