Dr. Carl E. Zylstra named CCCU chairman, NAICU policy chair

February 24, 2009

Dr. Carl E. Zylstra, president of Dordt College, has accepted leadership roles in two major associations for the advancement of private colleges: the CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities) and the NAICU (National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities).

Dr. Zylstra was named the new chair of the CCCU Board of Directors at the 33rd Annual Presidents Conference, held at Washington, D.C. January 29-31.

The CCCU is a higher education association of 181 intentionally Christ-centered institutions located throughout the world. Dordt College is among 111 qualifying member colleges in North America who adhere to the mission statement of the CCCU, “To advance the cause of Christ-centered higher education and to help our institutions transform lives by faithfully relating scholarship and service to biblical truth.”

In accepting the role of chairman, Dr. Zylstra said it is a great time to serve, with association President Paul Corts setting a firm course. “Membership is growing. Student programs are expanding. Overall, the council provides an incomparable package of institutional and presidential support, leadership training, faculty development, student programming, and public policy advocacy,” said Zylstra. He added that the CCCU is “a movement that can strengthen all of us involved in Christ-centered higher education. Chairing the board is both humbling and exciting.”

Dr. Zylstra will serve a two-year term as chairman.

Dr. Zylstra was also named the NAICU Tax Policy Chair and elected to serve on the executive committee during the annual meeting in February.

NAICU (National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities) is a national association serving as the unified voice for nearly 1,000 independent colleges and universities. NAICU member institutions enroll nine of every 10 students attending a private college or university in the United States.

Dr. Zylstra was selected to serve on the NAICU board of directors in 2007. Members of the NAICU board of directors set the association’s agenda on federal higher education policy; actively encourage support of NAICU priorities and initiatives; and oversee the association’s financial administration. Members serve three-year terms.

As chair of the Tax Policy Committee, Dr. Zylstra will focus on the development and advocacy of the association’s position on tax policy as it relates to independent higher education.

“Dr. Carl E. Zylstra was selected by his peers because of his expertise in the field, proven leadership, and commitment to America’s college students,” said NAICU President David L. Warren. “He assumes his responsibilities at a time of great challenge and transformation for American higher education. The federal budget deficit, growing student financial need, increasingly competitive global economy, and today’s culture of accountability are among the dynamics affecting higher education.”

Dr. Carl E. Zylstra was appointed as the third president of Dordt College in 1996. Dr. Zylstra has served as vice president of the Board of World Ministries of the Christian Reformed Church, president of the Christian Reformed World Missions, on the Board of Trustees of Calvin College and Seminary, and as the secretary of the Board of Dordt College. He recently retired as president of the Iowa Campus Compact, an association of Iowa public and private colleges and universities committed to fostering civic engagement on their campuses.

Dr. Zylstra holds a Ph. D. in practical theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, a master of divinity degree from Calvin Theological Seminary and his undergraduate degree from Calvin College.
