Douma Named Dordt Men's Basketball Coach
February 11, 2009(Wednesday, February 11; Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College athletic director Rick Vander Berg has announced Ross Douma has accepted an offer to coach the Dordt College men’s basketball program and work in the Dordt College Health, Physical Education and Recreation department.
Douma, currently the head boys basketball coach at Waukee High School, is in his tenth year of coaching high school basketball. Douma had a 128-94 record in his previous nine seasons at Hartley Melvin Sanborn, Chicago Christian and Waukee. Douma’s 2008 Waukee team qualified for the Class 4A Iowa High School State Tournament.
Douma served as head coach at Hartley Melvin Sanborn from 1998-2001 and led the Hawks to their first and only district championship in school history. While at Chicago Christian he coached the team to two 20-win seasons in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 during his four-year stint at the school. His 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 teams at Chicago Christian earned regional titles. Douma moved to Waukee before the 2006-2007 season. Douma was named the District Coach of the Year in 2008 and also was selected as the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association District Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005. He has been picked to coach in the Iowa High School All-Star Goalsetter’s game at the conclusion of the 2008-2009 season.
The Sanborn, Iowa native has also served as a teacher, assistant principal and dean of students at his previous stops. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa (1995) and he earned his Master of Arts degree from Governors State University in University Park, Illinois in 2006.
Douma was an all-state basketball player at Western Christian in Hull, Iowa and was a member of three national tournament qualifying teams at Northwestern.
Ross and his wife Shawn have three children, Dustin, Erika and Caleb.
