Twenty-one short films created by local high school and college-age students during the third annual Prairie Grass Film Challenge will be screened on the campus of Dordt College on Friday, Feb. 13, from 6-8 p.m. The awards ceremony will be held at 8:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium.
Both the movie showing and the awards ceremony are free and open to the public. This is your chance to see what can be created in a mere 48 hours! During the movie screening, popcorn, soft drinks and cotton candy will be served.
Participants this year include high school teams from Lincoln High School, Washington High School, Unity Christian High School, and Central Decatur High School; along with college teams from Morningside College, Briar Cliff University, South East Tech, South Dakota State, Minnesota West, the University of Iowa, Graceland University, North Central Missouri College, Northwest Missouri State University, and 11 teams from Dordt College. Alumni from Buena Vista University, the University of South Dakota, and the University of Nebraska Lincoln have also formed teams for the competition.
All approved movies created during the challenge will be shown, with only the top five picks aired at the 8:30 p.m. award ceremony. After the showing of the top five videos, judges will announce their pick for “Best of Show” which will be awarded $500, the coveted Dordty Award, and an AVID software digital editing package ($3,000 value).
The first runner-up team receives $250; and the Peoples’ Choice Award (based on voting submitted on the Film Challenge website) receives $150.
All of the entries will be posted at www.dordt.edu/filmchallenge, where anyone may log on to see the films and vote for their favorite team’s movie.
