Musica Antiqua

Musica Antiqua, a professional touring ensemble that presents music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, will present a concert at Dordt College’s B.J. Haan Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 13, at 6:30 p.m.

There is no charge to attend this concert, hosted by the Dordt College Music Department.

This unique ensemble from Iowa State University plays music on 12th- 17th century replica instruments. At the conclusion of each concert, audience members are invited to examine instruments more closely and even try playing some of them.

Performers in the ensemble are dressed in period costumes, and each concert is placed in its historical, sociological, and cultural settings. Music ranges from sophisticated florid solo songs to bawdy Jacobean ballads. Instruments demonstrated include the lute, gemshorn, bladder pipe, and schawm.

Musica Antiqua is Iowa's longest performing early music ensemble, receiving Touring Grants from the Iowa Arts Council every year since 1971.
