Dordt College Concludes Play at Volleyball National Tournament

(December 4; Sioux City, Iowa)The Dordt College Defender volleyball season came to a close with a five-set loss the University of Mobile in the final match of pool play at the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. The Defenders dropped the decision after leading 2-1 in sets. Game scores were 19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 15-12.

Dordt started the match by pulling away from a 5-5 tie to take a 15-11 lead on a Kristin De Ronde kill. Mobile was never able to make a run back to even and lost 25-19 with De Ronde putting away the set winner.

Set two had the two teams battle to ten ties with the last one at 15-15. From there the Defenders allowed six points in a row and never got close with Mobile going to their outside hitter, Whitney Knight, repeatedly.

Set three featured a Dordt College comeback from down 17-11 take a 20-17 lead with Amber Weingartner serving the way. Kelsey Van Dyke had a pair of kills in the string and it was De Ronde again putting away the set winner.

Set four had Dordt with their chances, tying the set at 20-20, Dordt was unable to continue the run and lost 25-21, surrendering five of the last six points.

Set five had Dordt in front early, but the Defenders couldn't maintain the a 7-5 lead, allowing three points in a row. Dordt led briefly at 9-8 on a net violation, but that was the last lead the Defenders held in falling 15-12. Dordt had the difference down to 13-12 on a De Ronde kill but a block on the final point allowed Mobile their 34th win of the season.

Dordt College was led in kills by Kristin De Ronde's 21 kills while Kendra Potgeter had 15. April Solsma put away 12 kills with Cassie Huizenga lofting 32 assists and Jessica De Stigter had 21. Dorinda Hibma was the dig leader with 19 and Huizenga had ten.

Mobile was led by Whitney Knight's 23 kills and Nicole Stokes put up 46 assists and had a team high 12 digs.

Dordt finishes the tournament 0-3 in pool play and 32-10 overall while Mobile finishes the season 34-5 overall and 1-2 in pool play. Neither team advances to the 12-team championship bracket beginning Friday morning, December 5.

DAY TWO


(December 3; Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team dropped their second match of pool play at the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. The Defenders dropped a narrow 25-23, 28-26, 24-26, 25-22 decision to the fifth seed in the tournament, Columbia (Missouri).

The Defenders got out quickly with a 21-15 lead on a Kristin De Ronde kill. After a Columbia timeout the Defenders surrendered a point but kept the lead at six after a service error by the Cougars. Flavia Lino came alive with two kills to ignite the Columbia run to get back to within 22-21. A block by Kendra Potgeter and April Solsma seemingly restored order, but, a Maria Omondi kill followed by a Lino kill tied the game at 23. Columbia then scored the final two points on a hitting error and a two-hit violation to squeeze out the win.

Set two was tightly contested with Dordt holding an 18-16 lead after a Dorinda Hibma ace serve. Columbia scored two in a row to tie it and the set was tied again at 19, 23, 24, 25 and 26. Dordt never served for the set with Columbia controlling the serve. A Kristin De Ronde tied the set at 26 but Omondi registered another kill and Columbia got a block to take the win 28-26.

Dordt, in danger of fading, trailed 15-10 in set three but mounted a comeback to tie it at 17 on a Potgeter kills and while Kelsey Van Dyke and April Solsma had kills to tie at 18 and 19. A De Ronde kill knotted the score at 20 and Potgeter got into the act to tie it at 21. Potgeter gave Dordt a lead at 24-23 on a kill and teamed up with Van't Hul for a 25-24 lead and an ace serve by Amber Weingartner forced set four 26-24.

Set four featured six ties up to 21-21 when Columbia scored two in a row for a 23-21 lead. A Brandee Schaap kill got Dordt back to within 23-22 but the Defenders couldn't keep the momentum in falling 25-22 on a Branco kill and a Lino kill.

The Defenders were led at the net by Kristin De Ronde's 15 kills while Kelsey Van Dyke had 14 and Kendra Potgeter 13. Cassie Huizenga had 24 assists and Jessica De Stigter had 23. Dorinda Hibma got to 39 digs and Jessica De Stigter and Cassie Huizenga got to 14 each with Van Dyke credited with 13.

Columbia was led by Lino's 27 and Maria Omondi had nine with Branco putting up 54 assists.

Dordt is 32-9 and face elimination from the tournament with an 0-2 mark. The Defenders must hope for a Mobile upset of Azusa Pacific, a win by Dordt over Mobile on Thursday and a Columbia win over Azusa Pacific to force a three-way tie for second place in their pool. Without those occurances, the Defender season will end after the Mobile match on Thursday at 11:00. Columbia is currently 41-3.

DAY ONE
The Dordt College Defender volleyball team dropped their first match of pool play at the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. The Defenders fought from behind most of the day and lost 25-23, 25-22, 25-14.

Dordt fell behind in set one by a 16-10 count but re-grouped to make a run back at the Cougars. Down 23-18 the Defenders scored five points in a row, the last on a Kristin De Ronde block to tie it at 23-23. A service error by the Defenders gave Azusa Pacific the lead and a service ace by the Cougars sealed the win.

Set two featured 11 ties to 13-13 when Azusa Pacific pulled away for a 19-15 lead. Dordt got as close as 20-19 on a Kelsey Van Dyke kill but Azusa Pacific held the Defenders off for a 25-22 win.

Volleyball Set three was all Cougars as they scored 11 points in a row to go from down 4-3 to up 14-4 and were never challenged. Dordt got as a close as 19-14 but the 8th seeded Cougars rolled on to win 25-14 with six unanswered points.

Dordt was led by Kendra Potgeter's 11 kills. Larissa Veldhuizen registered nine kills and Kelsey Van Dyke eight. Jessica De Stigter and Cassie Huizenga each had 13 assists and Van Dyke had a team high 10 digs.

Azusa Pacific got 14 kills from Jill Baker and 10 by Chelsea Daley. Allison Kincheloe lofted 22 assists and had a match high 11 digs.

Dordt is 32-8 while Azusa Pacific is 23-10. Dordt plays match two of pool play on Wednesday, December 3 at 11:00. Dordt concludes pool play on Thursday at 11:00 against Mobile (Alabama). The top two teams in each of the six pools advance to the championship bracket on Friday, December 5.
