Dordt Volleyball Advances In NAIA Tournament Play
November 22, 2008
The Dordt College Defender volleyball team held off Indiana Wesleyan in an Opening Round contest in the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament. The win vaults the Defenders to the Final Site in Sioux City, Iowa December 2-6 along with 23 other teams while Indiana Wesleyan's season ends at 27-15.
Dordt started slowly in set one with the hosts falling behind by a 12-4 margin with Indiana Welsyean's Kelley Morris knocking a kill through. Dordt ran off the next eight points with Dorinda Hibma in the service area and the two teams proceeded to play to ties at 13, 14, and 15 with Dordt getting a little breathing room on a Kendra Potgeter kill and a Wesleyan hitting error. Dordt actually built the lead to 24-18 but the Wildcats scored the next four points with Rebeka Reichard getting a kill to make it 24-22. A Larissa Veldhuizen kill ended the threat and gave Dordt the 1-0 set lead.
Set two had eight ties to the 16-16 points with Dordt taking the lead on an April Solsma kill. Dordt pushed the lead to 22-20 only to have the visitors rebound to tie it on a two-hit violation on Dordt. The two top-25 teams were tied again at 23 with Reichard getting a kill through but a Betsy Van't Hul kill put Dordt up by a point and a Reichard hitting error gave Dordt the win at 25-23.
Indiana Wesleyan was able to hold off the sweep in set three, stiff-arming the Defenders to a 21-17 lead. A Reichard kill put the Wildcats up by the four point margin but the Defenders trimmed the lead down and were trailing 23-22 when service error out of a timeout pushed them to set point and they held on to win 25-22.
The final set featured seven ties, the last at 15 with Dordt taking the lead from that point on a pair of Wesleyan errors and the Defenders pulled away for a six point win with Dordt's lone senior, Kristin De Ronde getting a kill in the run to put the win away.
Dordt was led by Kendra Potgeter's 14 kills and she was in on a solo block and four assisted blocks. Kelsey Van Dyke had 12 kills and 22 digs while Kristin De Ronde put down ten kills with five assisted blocks. Jessica De Stigter and Cassie Huizenga lofted 30 and 23 assists a piece and Dorinda Hibma had a match high 28 digs. Brandee Schaap was also in double figures in digs for the Defenders with 13.
Indiana Wesleyan was led by Rebekah Reichard with 15 kills and Kelli Ziegler had eight. Krystin Coleman put up 16 assists and Christy Beam had 15. Kelsey Masuda accounted for a team high 18 digs.
Dordt is the fourth Great Plains Athletic Conference team to advance to the Final Site of the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament joining Morningside, Northwestern and Doane. This is Dordt's first trip to the tournament since 2005 and is their seventh overall. Dordt will learn their pool assignment for the 24-team field on Sunday, November 23.
