Advent Hymn Festival, organ workshop at Dordt College
November 13, 2008
An Advent Hymn Festival will be held on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 3 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. Featured on the organ will be Dordt College’s Artist-in-Residence, Dr. Robert Horton. This free performance is sponsored by the Dordt College Music Department.
The “Festival of Hymns and Readings for Advent” will feature audience singing of familiar and new songs for Advent, led by Dr. Horton on the organ. Dordt student instrumentalists will accompany some of the songs, and members of the English department will read Advent poetry and prose.
Dr. Horton will also present a workshop for organists on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m. at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. All area organists are invited to this opportunity to again meet with Dr. Horton and fellow organists, sponsored by Dordt College. This workshop will focus on music for Advent and conducting from the console. There is no admission charge. For more information, call 722-6205.
Additional artist-in-residence performances with Dr. Horton will be held at Dordt on Friday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. (the work of Felix Mendelssohn) and Sunday, April 19, at 3 p.m. (an Easter hymn festival).
Dr. Horton holds a doctorate in organ performance from The University of Kansas, and from 2005-2008 he served as Assistant Professor of Music at Dordt College. International awards for his performances include the Jordan International Competition prize, the Max Reger prize in the American Guild of Organists Young Artist Competition, and first place in the Mikhail Tariverdiev International Organ Competition in Kaliningrad, Russia.
