Senior recital Nov. 15 at Dordt

November 10, 2008

Smith and Radde

Dordt College seniors Bridget Smith and Leah Radde will present a recital on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. Also participating in the recital will be Jason Kornelis, cello; Elaine Hannink in a piano duet; and Helen Van Beek, accompanist.

Bridget Smith, Des Moines, will perform on the piano. The daughter of Bill and Debra Smith, she is a communication major with an emphasis in journalism and a minor in music performance.

Smith’s favorite piece in her portion of the recital is “La Cathedrale Engloutie” by Debussy, which she says clearly shows the influence of Impressionist art by using deep, dissonant chords to tell the legend of the sunken cathedral. Smith’s private instructor at Dordt is Mary Lou Wielenga.

Leah Radde, Cologne, Minn., will be playing the clarinet. The daughter of Darel and Krista Radde, she is a business major with a minor in music performance. Her private instructor at Dordt is Dr. Karen De Mol.

Radde will begin her portion of the recital with a piece by Mozart, in an arrangement by Simeon Bellison, a famed clarinetist in his day. She’ll also do a piece by 20th Century British composer Gerald Finzi, and a Mendelssohn three movement concert piece for clarinet, cello, and piano. “The movements follow a quick, slow, quick pattern,” said Radde. “It’s a really great piece as the cello’s dark tones contrast with the brighter sound of the clarinet and piano.”

A reception will be held following the performance, and the public is welcome to attend.
