Wielenga organ recital Oct. 18

October 10, 2008

An organ recital in celebration of the International Year of the Organ will be offered at Dordt College on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m.

Presenting the recital is Mary Lou Wielenga, an organist on the music faculty at Dordt College. She will be performing on the Casavant organ in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. The recital will demonstrate the sounds of the pipe organ, and will include a humorous piece narrated by Ron Rynders (in rap style!), “Rex, King of Instruments,” which explains the organ.

Karen De Mol, faculty clarinetist, will join Wielenga in presenting a prize winning composition written in honor of the year-long celebration.

Also on the program will be Karg-Elert’s “Praise the Lord With Drums and Cymbals, including “Settings of Ps. 150,” “Benedictus,” and “Carillon-Sortie.”

Wielenga did undergraduate work in organ, piano, and church music at Drake University, and earned her Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance from Morningside College. She earned a pair of Masters Degrees at the University of South Dakota, one in organ performance and literature, and the other in piano performance and literature. She has performed in many faculty recitals, organ anniversary recitals, dedications, and presented workshops for church organists and pianists.

Now in her 30th year of teaching piano and organ at Dordt College, Wielenga also teaches at Northwestern College, and has previously taught at Morningside and Westmar Colleges. She is also a church organist and has a private studio of piano and organ students.

The public is cordially invited to attend this free recital, sponsored by the Dordt College Music Department.
