Sea-to-Sea

A group of nearly 150 bicyclists pedaling their way across the country will spend the night at Sioux Center on Tuesday, Aug. 5.

A community celebration has been planned that night at 7 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium, providing the opportunity to gather with cyclists and, through video and riders’ testimonies, rejoice over what God is doing on the tour.

A ministry fair and refreshments will also be offered, with displays set up in Dordt’s Campus Center. Groups participating in the ministry fair include Mid-Sioux Opportunity, Greater Sioux Community Health Center, Justice For All, Farmer to Farmer, the Bridge, Atlas, and Hope Haven’s wheelchair ministry. Christian Reformed and Reformed Church mission, social justice, and world relief agencies will also be represented, to share the opportunities available to Christians who are willing to help those in need.

Sea to Sea is the largest cross-continental bike tour ever, with 218 cyclists registered, of which 127 are going the full distance. The group began their two month ride on June 30 in Seattle, WA, and will conclude the trip two months later at Jersey City, NJ, on Aug. 30.

Barb Mellema, Dordt College’s Director of Annual Giving, has posted a blog to share her experiences on the ride. Sheryl Taylor, Dordt College’s Director of Library Services, is also doing a segment of the ride, from Denver to Grand Rapids.

Tour sponsors include the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, Christian Reformed World Missions, Partners Worldwide, and RCA Global Mission. Each cyclists’ fund-raising target is $10,000 (or $4,000 for one leg of the route) to support new and ongoing programs that break the cycle of poverty for individuals, families, and communities around the world.

Cyclists will do a 60-mile ride from Sergeant Bluff to Sioux Center on Aug. 5, and then be overnight guests in Dordt College’s (air-conditioned) Covenant Hall. Providing dinner for the riders will be Pizza Ranch and Carrie Foods.
