Van Den Bosch Conducts Camp In Japan
July 16, 2008
(Wednesday; July 16; Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College head volleyball coach Tom Van Den Bosch recently returned from conducting a skills camp. While the career wins leader at Dordt College conducts several camps every summer, this camp had a decidedly different flavor with the veteran of 11 college seasons traveling to Japan to conduct a camp for the Kyoto International Christian School.
“Running a volleyball camp at an international Christian school was an opportunity I could not pass up,” said Van Den Bosch. “The students were extremely receptive to me as a coach and a person.”
Van Den Bosch conducted the camp at a government youth center July 7-11 in Osaka. Van Den Bosch was thrust into the typical life of a student at the youth center.
“We got up each morning at 6:30 and did roll call with raising the flag,” said Van Den Bosch. “I slept on a mattress and ate all my meals with chopsticks—it was either that or go hungry.”
The camp also fit in with Van Den Bosch’s dual role as associate director of admissions at Dordt College.
“Although adjusting to the Japanese culture, climate and food was quite interesting to say the least, the friendships and experience will be something I will never forget,” said Van Den Bosch. “I hope many of them will now consider Dordt College as a place to continue their education after high school. It was exciting to see God use volleyball as a way to build a bridge between these two institutions.”
One of the camp participants will be enrolling at Dordt College in August 2008. Ruth Nuamah announced her intention to attend Dordt College in February and plans to join a Defender volleyball program that reached the NAIA Region III tournament in 2007 and has qualified for six NAIA national tournaments under Van Den Bosch. Dordt College will open the 2008 volleyball season August 22 in Brownsville, Texas in a tournament hosted by the University of Texas-Brownsville.
