Soodsma Named Freshman of the Year, Three other Dordt College Women Earn All-Conference Honors

(Wednesday, March 5; Sioux Center, Iowa) Four Dordt College women’s basketball players have earned post-season honors from the Great Plains Athletic Conference for the recently completed 2007-2008 season.

Amber Soodsma (Freshman; Hudsonville, Michigan) was picked for second-team all-GPAC honors and was named GPAC Freshman of the Year after averaging a team high 11.6 points per game with 5.7 rebounds and 43 assists along with 49 steals in 29 games played. Soodsma made 41.5 percent of her shots from the floor and started all 29 games as the Defenders went 12-19 this season and 6-12 in the GPAC.

Kate Du Mez (Sophomore; Brookfield; Wisconsin), McKinzie Schmidt (Sophomore; Gordon, Nebraska) and Kara Karlsgodt (Senior; Atwater, Minnesota) all claimed honorable mention honors for their play this season. Du Mez was co-leader with Soodsma in scoring with an 11.6 points per game average and also grabbed 4.1 rebounds while dishing out 122 assists and getting to 83 steals. The 122 assists is the second most in a single season in Dordt College women’s basketball. Du Mez was also an honorable mention pick last season.

Schmidt led the Defenders in rebounding this season with an 8.5 average and also knocked down 9.5 points pre game while converting 40 percent of her field goal tries. Karlsgodt concluded her Dordt College basketball career with an 8.3 points per game average and she also grabbed 6.9 rebounds per outing. The lone senior on Dordt’s second semester roster, Karlsgodt became just the seventh player in Dordt history to score over 800 points (824) and grab 600 rebounds (624).
