Graphic Design symposium Thursday, Friday

February 13, 2008

A design symposium will be held Thursday, Feb. 14, at 4 p.m. in Dordt’s Classroom Building C160.

Four area designers (David Ver Meer, Rock Rapids; Janna Rohde, Boyden; Matt Van Rys, Ireton; and Sarah Versluis De Young from St. Paul) will present a panel discussion on the preparation and challenges of working in the field.

The evening presentation begins at 7 p.m. and features Dordt's graphic designer, Jamin Ver Velde, along with Jamey Schiebout, art director at Creative Resources Inc. in Orange City.

A come and go reception has also been scheduled, Friday evening, Feb. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Campus Center Art Gallery.

These events hosted by the Dordt College Art Department are in conjunction with the first Alumni Graphic Design Exhibition at the Campus Center Art Gallery February 6-29.

The display features 18 graduates from the past 14 years who are actively working in the field of graphic design. The event was organized by Jacob van Wyk, and the exhibit will be curated and displayed by David Versluis. Graphic designers in the exhibition are: Tara Warolin, Sarah Versluis De Young, Sarah Franken, John Den Boer, Nathan Regnerus, Brent Koops, Kimberly Hoogeveen Lamb, Emily Hoogendoorn Mulder, David Ver Meer, Jamin Ver Velde, Rebecca Oldenkamp, Joshua Visser, Laryn Bakker, June Brands, Matthew Van Rys, Amber Boon Noteboom, Steven Van Wyk, and Jamey Schiebout.

For over a decade Dordt alumni have been developing an industry reputation in graphic design, and this exhibition displays the wide range of design work being accomplished by graduates. On display will be outstanding design solutions, each demonstrating the process of designing, the role of the designer, and the value of design in our culture. Selections range from design for not-for-profit advocacy organizations and Christian missions to corporate communication, as well as original equipment manufacturers.

Selections and categories in the show include corporate communications design, brand and identity systems including marketing materials, package design, editorial design and illustration, typographic design, promotional design and advertising, exhibition and experience design including web design, architectural and signage design and illustration, information design, and covers for books and CD/DVDs.

The public is invited to all three events and to view the exhibit in the gallery in the campus center throughout the month of February. The Campus Center Art Gallery is open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Dordt College offers art degrees with five different emphases: fine arts studio, graphic design, art history, teaching art, or pre-architecture.
