Iowa Composers commission Kornelis

January 10, 2008

Dr. Benjamin Kornelis, professor of music at Dordt College, has been selected as the 2008 commissioning project recipient by the Iowa Choral Directors Association and the Iowa Composers Forum (ICDA-ICF).

Only one commission is awarded each year, based on submissions from Iowa composers who vie for the honor of composing a piece to represent the organization, and the accompanying $1,000 cash award.

Kornelis’ as yet unwritten work will be presented at a summer symposium, after which ICDA members and choral ensembles may perform it royalty free for one year.

This year’s composition is to be written for a children’s choir. Dr. Kornelis is currently director of the Siouxland Boys Choir.

Kornelis submitted the text he will be using in his application, along with samples of previously published work. He has published several choral anthems and arrangements with Harrock Hall Music, as well as two choral anthems and a hymn in “Songs of Rejoicing: Hymns for Worship, Meditation and Praise,” by Selah Publishers.

Dr. Kornelis has been a music professor at Dordt since 1994, and he directs the Dordt College Chorale, Concert Choir, and Kantorei. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts from Michigan State University; a Master of Music degree from Western Washington University; and a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Vocal Music Education from Calvin College.
