Morningside Art

The Dordt College Campus Center Art Gallery is featuring an exhibition of work by the Morningside College art faculty from Dec. 3 through Jan. 10.
Participating Morningside artists will be honored at a reception Thursday, Dec. 6, from 5- 7 p.m., with a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m.

This exhibit was sparked by a conversation between John Bowitz and Jake Van Wyk, art department chairs at Morningside and Dordt College (respectively), who thought students at both campuses could benefit by an exchange of faculty art and the sharing of artistic resources. Dordt’s faculty will present an exhibit at Morningside’s Eppley Art Gallery in February.

Bowitz served as curator for the show now on display at Dordt’s Campus Center gallery. Contemporary genres and a variety of media from full-time and part-time faculty are included in the exhibit, with each piece self-selected for the exhibit by the artists.

“The media that you see reflects the art disciplines that these artist/professors teach at Morningside,” said Bowitz. Dolie Thompson teaches photography, John Kolbo teaches graphic design courses, Terri McGaffin teaches painting and other studio courses, Karen Emenhiser teaches painting and design, Barry Lawrensen teaches web design and is an accomplished photographer, Michael Northrup is a professional photographer who teaches that media, Amy Foltz contributes to design, drawing, and printmaking, Shannon Sargent does sculpture, and Bowitz teaches art history, drawing, and ceramics.

“The work reflects the diversity of individuals pursuing their goals in art,” said Bowitz.

The public is invited to this free art exhibition. The Campus Center Art Gallery is open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
