Schaap presentation Aug. 23 at B.J. Haan

August 22, 2007

Dr. James Calvin Schaap, author and professor at Dordt College, will present a local preview of an upcoming denominational sesquicentennial performance on Thursday, Aug. 23, at the the B.J. Haan Auditorium in Sioux Center. The public is invited to attend Schaap’s 7:30 p.m. video and talk, which will be followed by a reception. This event is sponsored by First CRC’s Education Committee.

Dr. James C. Schaap’s presentation, “What About a Bicentennial,” looks at what might lie ahead for church denominations, in an era when many are suffering membership loss. The ethnographical-historical presentation features video clips from Schaap’s visits to churches and institutions throughout North America. Dordt College junior, Jess Brauning, from the Dominican Republic, produced the video segments.

Dr. Schaap wrote CRC Family Portrait for the 125th anniversary of the Christian Reformed Church, and, in 1998, Our Family Album: The Unfinished Story of the CRC, as well as a dramatic presentation based on that history. For several years, he was a contributing editor of The Banner and has written numerous devotional books for children. He teaches writing and literature at Dordt College.

Schaap will share this presentation Sept. 14 at a denominational conference celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Christian Reformed Church in North America. “Grace Through Every Generation” is the theme of the sesquicentennial observance that will take place on the campus of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
