Dordt students claim art show awards

Ten Dordt College art students claimed more than a dozen awards at the 43rd annual Tri-State Art Show, held April 14 and 15 at the Forster Community Center in Rock Rapids.

Awards are given in each media, along with two overall awards (best of show and judge’s choice). Artists could submit two entries of original design per medium, which were created within the past three years. Both amateurs and professionals were invited to submit their work.

Students claiming awards for their art were:

• Caryn Nydam, Modesto, CA: first, second, and third place drawings, and the Juror’s Choice Award; and third place sculpture

• Dan Slager, Snohomish, WA: first place in black and white photography

• Amanda Niewenhuis, Corsica, SD: first place sculpture, an honorable mention in sculpture and drawing

• Joanna Esselink, Emo, ON: first place in printmaking

• Lauralee Stel, Lansing, IL: second place and third place paintings

• Megan Haan, Sioux Center, IA: second place sculpture

• Mary Jo Van Essen, Sioux Falls, SD: second place in photography

• Naomi De Boer, Sioux Center, IA: third place drawing

• Lindsey Shearer, Monument, CO: third place in photography

• Diane Feucht, Puyallup, WA: honorable mention for a painting

• Laura Vahrmyrer, Ridgeville, ON: honorable mention in photography
