Dordt College Alumni Weekend Feb. 16-17

Dordt College friends and alumni are invited to the campus Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-17, for the annual Alumni Weekend.

“Weekend with the Stars” will be filled with special events, including an opportunity to star-gaze with recently acquired telescopes; athletic competitions; an art show and reception; a Saturday afternoon kids carnival; and other opportunities throughout the weekend for Dordt’s alumni to reconnect.

Selected as this year’s distinguished alumna is Ida (Kaastra) Mutoigo, a 1982 graduate who is now the director of Christian Reformed World Relief Committee-Canada. Kaastra Mutoigo has a B.A. in agriculture and biology from Dordt College and a B.S. in crop science from the University of Guelph .

She spent nine years in Uganda as a planning and development advisor and then as Uganda field director for the CRWRC. She also spent five years as the Christian Reformed Church’s ServiceLink coordinator in Ontario, Canada, before returning to Africa to assume the responsibilities of ESAMT Team Leader.

Mutoigo will speak at chapel on Thursday, Feb. 15, 10:50 a.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. She will also be honored at an alumni banquet Friday night, where the Distinguished Service Award recipient, Mary (Vander Ploeg) Post will also receive recognition for her work.

Post is a 1979 Dordt graduate who earned her M.A. in Library Science from the University of Iowa in 1983. She has served Chicago West Side Christian School for over 20 years, and is also a member of the Lawndale Christian Reformed Church, both located in a struggling inner city neighborhood.

The Distinguished Service Award is new. It was established by the Dordt College Alumni Council to recognize an individual nominated by alumni who demonstrates exemplary service to the college or community.

Alumni art (Chloe Hilden and Sam Gutierrez can be viewed throughout the weekend at the Dordt Campus Center Art Gallery, with an artist reception Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Star-gazing will be Friday night from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in front of the Campus Center. Astronomy professor, Dr. Douglas Allen, will be on hand to direct telescopes toward stars and planets.

A kids carnival will be offered at the Dordt College Recreation Center on Saturday, from 1-4 p.m. by the Future Active Teachers (FACT) Club. Children are welcome to enjoy the carnival while parents enjoy Defender basketball, with proceeds benefiting PLIA (Putting Love Into Action) service projects.

In sports action, the Blades hockey team will face the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the All Seasons Center. Saturday morning it will be JV basketball versus alumni at 11 a.m. in the De Witt Gymnasium. Saturday afternoon it’s Dordt College versus Dana, with the women playing at 1 and the men at 3 p.m.
