‘God in the Movies’ Feb. 8 at Dordt

February 7, 2007

“What God Looks Like: Seeing God in the Movies,” is the topic of Dr. Roy Anker, Professor of English at Calvin College, who will speak at Dordt College on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Science Building Lecture Hall S101.

Using film clips to illustrate the impact of cinematography, music and editing on religious themes, Dr. Anker will discuss how God shows up amid the messy circumstances of life on the big screen. Sponsored by the English Department, this presentation is free and open to the public.

Dr. Anker has published a book on the subject, titled Catching Light: Looking for God in the Movies. In it, he looks beyond films that are overtly “Christian” to explore a wide variety of mainstream movies that have clear religious elements.

Before teaching at Calvin College, he taught English at Northwestern College in Orange City (1975-88).
