November 22, 2006

Little Women

An age-old story is getting a new twist this December in the Dordt College production, Little Women: A Classic Family Musical. The show will be presented 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 30, Dec. 1, 2, 7 and 9 at the New World Theatre (located on the southeast corner of Dordt's campus off Fourth Ave. NE), with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday Dec. 9.

This theatre adaptation of the classic novel is directed by senior Amy Blok and was written by Dordt alumnus Mark Du Mez. Tickets are only $1, but reservations are necessary for the limited seating. Reservations can be made by calling the box office at 722-6430 (Monday-Thursday 3-5 and 7-9; Friday 3-5 p.m.).

A holiday dessert social will be offered following the Saturday (Dec. 2) performance. Tickets for the social are $4 each, and can also be purchased from the box office in advance.

Little Women is the story of the four March sisters and the struggles they endure growing up during the Civil War era. Student director Amy Blok says the musical stays very true to the book, with the script adapted to theatre by Dordt alumnus Mark Du Mez, and Jim Hodgkin composing music and assisting with lyrics. The musical was first performed at the Chemainus Theatre Festival in British Columbia, and this Sioux Center performance will be the premiere performance in the U.S.

“It’s a charming show and I think it has something for everyone,” says Blok, from Lynden, WA. Assisting her in bringing it to Dordt’s New World Theatre are stage manager Sarah Hoogendoorn, Sioux Falls; costume designer Amber Huizenga, St. Louis, MO; producer T.J. Lagestee, Lansing, IL; Professor Jeri Schelhaas, faculty advisor; and Jim Van Ry, set construction.

Performing in the production will be Andrea De Jong, Joelle Riezebos, Garry Riezebos, and Paul Krygsman, Sioux Center; Jacob Kroeze, Orange City; Kenny Gradert, Ireton; Emily Stam, Oskaloosa, IA; Becky Lancaster, Cedar Rapids; Bethany Colvin, Lansing, IL; Evangeline Ciupek, Hutto, TX; Mark Bylenga, Escondido, CA; Jeremiah Kats, Boise, ID; Jonathon Shaffstall, West Milford, NJ; Aileen Nyman, St. Albert, AB; and pianist Chris Kuiper, Luverne, MN.

To make your reservations, call Dordt College’s box office at 722-6430 (Monday-Thursday 3-5 and 7-9; Friday 3-5 p.m.).
