Dordt College, Dakota Christian sponsor hunting excursion

November 20, 2006

A pheasant hunting weekend turned up more than roosters recently, as the proceeds from the hunt raised nearly $15,000, split equally between Dakota Christian School’s building fund (New Holland, SD) and a Dordt College “Rooster Booster Scholarship,” to provide financial aid to needy individuals seeking a Dordt College degree.

Pheasant Hunt

The 8-man hunting excursion was headed up by Dave Vander Werf, Director of Planned Giving at Dordt College. By partnering Dordt’s extensive alumni network with the hunting resources offered by Dakota Christian, Vander Werf said participants from Alaska, California, Michigan and Iowa were treated to a “fantastic hunting experience,” while benefiting the cause of Christian education.

Participants in the Nov. 9 through 11 hunting expedition were Ralph Roos, Ripon CA; Kevin Van Wyk, Pella, IA; Ron Van Den Berg, Sioux Center, IA; Tom Plooy Anchorage, AK; Ron Pagenkopf, Juneau, AK; Ken Beukelman, Holland, MI; Dave Vander Werf, Sioux Center, IA; and Dave Daining, Pella, IA. Their all-inclusive weekend included lodging, meals, hunting guides and dogs, access to private hunting areas, shells, sporting clays course, a souvenir shirt and cap, and transportation to and from area airports all included in the price.

“Dakota Christian offered tremendous food and hospitality,” commented Vander Werf. With true Midwest hospitality, Dakota Christian supporters offered their land for hunting, group meals, etc. Big Sky Hunting and Lodging, a family operated business at Corsica (operated by Randy and Diane Niewenhuis) provided lodging for the group.

Each of the hunters returned home with their limit of pheasants, making it a successful event for both the participants and the planners.

Any experienced hunters that would like information about next year’s weekend event are encouraged to contact Dave Vander Werf at or call 712-722-6023.
