Sioux County Folks' Featured in Photo Exhibit

October 31, 2006

Sioux County FolksThe many faces of Sioux County will be represented in a photographic exhibit at the Dordt College Campus Center Art Gallery Oct. 19-Nov. 30.

Portraits in the exhibit were taken by Doug Burg, Orange City, and are just a sampling of nearly 50 that will appear in the book Sioux County Folks, for which private/corporate donations are being sought to fund publication.

The illustrated book project is a collaboration between Burg and Dordt College English professor and author, James C. Schaap. In the upcoming book, Burg portrays an assortment of Sioux County individuals with his photography, while Schaap and six gifted student writers share the stories of these individuals and how they have impacted Sioux County life. Dordt College Art professor David Versluis is doing the design and layout for both the book and the Campus Center Art Gallery display.

Burg, Schaap and Versluis will discuss the ambitious project at a reception Thursday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. Guests are invited to view the work between the hours of 7-9 p.m. that evening.

“We tried to seek out people who don’t usually get recognized,” said Schaap of the book project nearing completion. Sioux Countians from all age groups and all regions of Sioux County were located and interviewed, resulting in unique stories of interesting backgrounds, personalities, jobs, or hobbies. Brief descriptions of the people portrayed in the art show will be hung alongside their photographs.

The public is invited to view this free exhibition daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., located in Dordt College’s Campus Center. The prints and cost of the exhibit were underwritten by Demco Printing in Boyden.
