Parents' Weekend October 20-21

Parents' Weekend

Family and friends are invited to the campus of Dordt College Oct. 20 and 21 for a weekend of fun and entertainment, featuring a music festival, art show, theater production, and sporting events.

The Dordt Theatre Arts Department will offer Parents Weekend performances of Arsenic and Old Lace on Thursday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Te Paske Theatre, as well as four performances for the general public nightly the following week, Oct. 25-28. To make reservations for any of these performances, call the box office at 722-6430 (Monday-Thursday 1-5 and 7-9; Friday 1-5 p.m.) or reserve tickets on-line.

Early arrivals on Friday morning will be treated to guided art tours with Dordt College art curator, Helena Geels. Two free tours start at the Campus Center Art Gallery at 9 and 10:30 a.m. Featured at the gallery beginning Oct. 19 is the photography of Doug Burg, Orange City, whose portraits will illustrate the Dordt Press book Sioux County Folks, written by Dordt College students and Professor James C. Schaap. The Classroom Building Art Gallery currently features the work of Erika Hydeen and Matt Kunnari, both Dordt College alumni, and a sculpture group by students is currently on display outdoors. All day Friday, parents of students are also invited to attend classes with their children.

Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. will be a Fall Music Festival in the B.J. Haan Auditorium, with a sampling of all the bands, choirs, the orchestra and other musical ensembles at Dordt College. Also on Friday night, the Dordt Blades will play I.S.U. at 7 p.m. in the All Seasons Center, and Defender volleyball will be at 7:30 in De Witt Gymnasium (junior varsity at 6 p.m.).

The sky observatory at the former homestead on the south edge of campus (East First Street) will be open for star-gazing (weather-permitting) from 7-9 p.m.

Saturday morning activities include a President’s Brunch, a men’s basketball scrimmage at 10 a.m. in De Witt Gymnasium, the opportunity to visit with faculty at Rec Center at 10:15, and the chance to participate in Academics in Action model classes at 11:15 a.m.

The Dordt College Jazz Band will perform at the Campus Center at noon on Saturday, with songs from the Big Band Era including “Blues in the Closet,” “Clearwater,” and “C-Jam Blues.”

Afternoon sports action includes women’s soccer versus Doane on the Dordt Soccer Field at 1 p.m. and men’s soccer versus Doane at 3 p.m. The women’s volleyball team will meet Nebraska Wesleyan at the De Witt Gym, with the JV game starting at 1:30 and the varsity game at 3 p.m.

Saturday evening sports action includes Blades Hockey versus U.S.U. at the All Seasons Center Saturday at 7 p.m., and a lacrosse match at the football field at 7 p.m.

A harpsichord recital with Dr. Rob Horton will be offered at 7:30 in the B.J. Haan Auditorium, followed by a complimentary ice cream social in the commons at 9:15 p.m.
