Concert Band, Chamber Orchestra concert April 25
April 18, 2006The Dordt College Concert Band and Chamber Orchestra will present a concert at the B.J. Haan Auditorium Tuesday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. Both ensembles are directed by Dr. Henry Duitman.
The chamber orchestra will present arrangements by Vivaldi, Washburn, Bach and Whear. Josh Meendering (Sioux Center) will be featured in “Guitar (Mandolin) Concerto in D Major,” Julie Ooms (Lansing, IL) will play the Irish drum for a set of Celtic dance tunes, and Ruth Lynch (Spirit Lake, ID) will be featured in “Concertino for Flute.”
The chamber orchestra will also present “Serenade for Strings” and Bach’s “Cantata No. 51” (Rejoice unto God in all Lands) with soprano Lisa De Vries (Orange City) and Tim Vande Griend (Salem, OR) on trumpet featured in an aria.
The Dordt College Concert Band will present Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide,” Copland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody,” “Merry Music for Wind Band” by Frigyes, and Sousa’s “The Thunderer March.” A Hungarian march by Berlioz and a suite of American dances by Bennett will also be included in the program.
The concert is free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be received to benefit music scholarships. More than 300 U.S. and international students participate in musical ensembles at Dordt College, including four choral groups, two orchestras, and three bands. Music scholarships are available to qualified students.
