High school students from 10 area schools had the opportunity to see and learn about the multi-faceted career opportunities that exist in agriculture and biotechnology on March 20, when the Dordt College Ag Department hosted tours of innovative businesses in the Sioux Center area.

Eight businesses graciously agreed to host tour groups, illustrating the wide range of career opportunities available in the area. They were Trans Ova Genetics, Hematech GAC Venture LLC, Sioux Preme Packing Company, Dykstra Dairy, Siouxland Energy and Livestock Coop (ethanol), Sioux Biochemical Inc., Sioux Pharm Inc., Sioux Automation, and Schuiteman Beef Finishing Feedlot.

Booths and educational displays at Dordt College also provided specific business and career orientation information. The guest speaker at a noon luncheon was Jim Wooster, a well-known and humorous farm broadcaster from Sioux Falls, S.D.

A total of 131 people participated in the biotech tours, from the following high schools: Dakota Christian, Gehlen Catholic, Netherlands Reformed Christian, Northwest Iowa Christian Home Educators; Sioux Falls Christian; Southwest Minnestota Christian; Southwest Star Concept; Unity Christian, West Lyon Community, and West Sioux. Unable to attend due to snowy road conditions were 36 students from Maple Valley High School.
