Dordt College to offer BSN completion program

March 13, 2006

Dordt College announces a joint agreement of instruction with St. Luke's College of Sioux City culminating in a BSN completion program on the Dordt College Campus beginning in the fall of 2006. Students who participate in this program will take their coursework on the Dordt College campus, while their clinicals and a one-credit pharmacology course will be taken at St. Luke’s. Nursing

The agreement is a natural enhancement to the existing, highly successful collaboration. Under the new agreement students will receive an associate of science in nursing degree (ASN) from St. Luke’s College after their junior year. They will then be eligible to sit for the national licensure exam to become a registered nurse (RN). After their senior year, they will receive a bachelor of science in nursing degree (BSN) from Dordt College.

“We are very excited about being able to offer a Dordt BSN degree from start to finish,” says Pamela L. Hulstein, Chairperson, Nursing Department at Dordt College. “Our program will assist nurses to function in multiple roles, giving them an advantage in the job market. Nurses today work in hospitals, community health centers, business, industrial and occupational health, health care administration, and affiliated services. All require a solid educational background that incorporates analytic, as well as interpersonal skills, and a Dordt degree offers exactly that.”

Dordt College officials indicate that in their view this is a natural expansion of the current collaboration between Dordt and St. Luke’s. It allows even more students to complete their studies for the RN while spending their entire four years of education living on the Dordt College campus and enjoying the camaraderie of the Dordt College community.

“A major benefit of this program is that it is designed around an associates degree, which allows students to sit for their national licensure exam after their junior year,” says Hulstein. “Taking this program at Dordt also gives students the full four-year, college experience, while at the same time minimizing travel to and from Sioux City.”

Students agree. “The reason I came to Dordt was for the nursing program,” says Lauren Zwier, freshman. “Being able to get my RN in three years instead of four is an amazing opportunity.” Tina Hielman, freshman, adds, “I like the fact that I can earn my BSN without having to transfer schools and will be able to finish with a BSN in four years.”

Dordt College and St. Luke’s College will begin implementation of this program next fall. The program is available to current freshmen and all those who come after them.

Dordt College, a Christian college located in Sioux Center, Iowa, enrolls approximately 1,250 students in over 40 academic programs leading to associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
