Dordt hosts high school math competition

A high school math competition was held at the Dordt College Science and Technology Center on Saturday, March 4. Schools participating in the competition were South O達rien, Sioux Center, Unity Christian and Western Christian high schools.

Unity Christian痴 team claimed first place in the math competition, with a total of 139-1/3 points. In second place was Sioux Center with 133-1/3 points, and third was South O達rien with 118-1/3 points.

The math competition consisted of two individual events and two team events.

The Target round, an individual event, consisted of eight questions, each worth 10 points. Questions were given out in pairs and each student had 10 minutes to complete each pair.

Winners of the Target Round are as follow: Sophomores: first place, Adrian Hielema (Unity Christian); tied for second place, Tim Gabhart (Sioux Center) and Dan Gradert (Sioux Center); Juniors: tied for first place, Traci Hoogland (Unity Christian) and Evita Puceta (Western Christian); third place Kara Den Herder (Sioux Center); Seniors: tied for first place, David McAlpine (Sioux Center) and Amy Renes (Sioux Center); tied for third place Charles Corcoran (South O達rien) and Paden Roder (South O達rien); Overall: first place, sophomore Adrian Hielema (Unity Christian); and second place was a four-way tie between junior Traci Hoogland (Unity Christian), senior David McAlpine (Sioux Center), junior Evita Puceta (Western Christian) and senior Amy Renes (Sioux Center).

The Sprint Round, also an individual event, consisted of 30 multiple-choice questions and a one-hour time limit. Winners of the Sprint are as follow: Freshmen: first place, Myles Boone (Sioux Center); second place, Jesse Post (Unity Christian); third place Jordan Huisman (Unity Christian); Sophomores: first place, Becky Renes (Sioux Center); second place, Paul Kleyer (Sioux Center); third place Aaron Hofmeyer (South O達rien). Juniors: first place, Carrie Hofland (Western Christian); second place, Jamie Bohnenkamp (Sioux Center); third place Tim Van Dyke (Sioux Center); Seniors: first place, Paden Roder (South O達rien); second place, Amy Renes (Sioux Center); third place Cory Gotto (Sioux Center); Overall: first place, junior Carrie Hofland (Western Christian); second place, senior Paden Roder (South O達rien); third place, sophomore Becky Renes (Sioux Center).

The Team Round, a group event, was a 10-question test with a 20 minutes time limit. Winners of the Team Round were the Sioux Center team of Andrew Carlson, Cory Gotto and Tim Van Dyke. The South O達rien team of Charles Corcoran, Paden Roder and Tony Sikora tied for second place with the Unity Christian team of Adrian Hielema, Traci Hoogland and Grant Zomermaand.

The last event, the Relay Round, was also a group event. The students worked in groups of three, with each completing one part of a three-part question. The second part of the question was based on the answer to Part 1, and the third part was based on the answer to Part 2. The third and final person was the only person to turn in an answer.

Winners of the relay were the Unity Christian team of Henry Byl, Matthew Hoogland and Jordan Huisman. Placing second were the Sioux Center team of Jamie Bohnenkamp, David McAlpine and Amy Renes. Placing third in the relay event were Kiley Boone, Myles Boone and Kara Den Herder, also representing Sioux Center High School.

Each school year there are six Great Plains Math League competitions held in the midwest, followed by a state meet.
