B.J. Haan Conference March 9, 10
March 3, 2006The 2006 B.J. Haan Education Conference will be March 9 and 10 at Dordt College. This year’s theme is “Teaching Math in the Christian School.”
This year over 100 participating Christian educators will explore a Christian perspective on math and math curriculum; methods of teaching math K-12; assessment and evaluation issues and challenges posed by math education standards.
The keynote address will be delivered by Calvin Jongsma, mathematics professor at Dordt College His topic is “Always Important, Never Enough: A Christian Perspective on Mathematics and Mathematics Education.” His address to registered participants will be presented on Thursday, March 9, at 1 p.m. in the Science Building Lecture Hall S101.
On Thursday, March 9, at 7 p.m., anyone interested may attend a session at Dordt College’s Science Building lecture hall S101. Dennis De Jong, mathematics professor at Dordt, will address the topic of math anxiety among school age students. In addition to De Jong’s comments, the evening will include skits, simulations, and a question and answer session for educators.
During the two-day conference, many “Math in Action” labs will be offered. Presenters include Andrea Wieringa (grade one teacher at Sioux Center Christian School); Ed Starkenburg (Dordt education professor); Dennis De Jong (Dordt mathematics professor); Tim Van Soelen (Dordt education professor); Dave Klanderman (Trinity Christian College mathematics professor); Andrew Busch (mathematics teacher at Fremont High School); Dennis Vander Plaats (Dordt education professor); Val Zonnefeld (Western Christian High School math teacher); Henry Kramer (Unity Christian High School math teacher); Pat Crull (Sioux Center Christian resource teacher); Rebecca De Smith (Sioux Center Christian TAG coordinator); Jon Postma (middle school Christian school teacher at Lafayette, IN); Dan Beerens (director of curriculum and instruction at Holland, MI Christian Schools); and John Van Dyk (director of the Center for Educational Services at Dordt College).
