Dec. 9 concert features Dordt vocal groups

December 1, 2005

The Dordt College Concert Choir, Kantorei and Women’s Chorus will present a Christmas concert on Friday, Dec. 9, 7:30 p.m. in the B.J. Haan Auditorium. Dordt’s Concert Choir, directed by Dr. Benjamin Kornelis, will sing works by Warlock, Mendelssohn, Rutter, and Tavener, as well as an arrangement of an old Dutch folk song, “Nu zijt wellekome Jesu.” Also on their program is a work by the contemporary Polish composer Józef Swider entitled “Cantus Gloriosus.”

The Kantorei vocal ensemble will present three settings of the chant “Conditor alme siderum,” including an anonymous setting from around 1400, a second by Dufay (1400-1474), and a third by Vittoria (1549-1611). They will also present “Uns ist ein Kind geboren” by the 18th-century composer Liebhold, and a vocal jazz arrangement of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” as performed by ‘Take 6.’

The Women’s Chorus, directed by Pam De Haan, will sing “Christmas Gloria” with organ and brass accompaniment. The women will also bring some Caribbean flavor to the concert with “Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy.”

Admission for the concert is free, with an offering being received to benefit music scholarships at Dordt College.
