September 19, 2005

Doreen's Jazz New OrleansDoreen’s Jazz New Orleans, a jazz group displaced by Hurricane Katrina, will perform in concert at the Dordt College Campus Center, September 24 at 8:00 p.m. A freewill offering will be received for Dordt College’s hurricane relief efforts.

Doreen’s Jazz New Orleans has performed across the country and in Canada, Europe, South America, and the Far East. They have also performed for four U.S. presidents. Doreen’s Jazz New Orleans not only performs for their audiences, but they also educate through audience participation. Their interest lies in spreading the culture and traditional music of New Orleans all over the world. A reviewer from the Dallas Morning News stated, “It's been a while since I've heard a true clarinet sound like that of Doreen Ketchens. Her virtuosity makes it seem so easy to hit those high notes. It's no wonder why they call her ‘Queen Clarinet.’”

The performance at Dordt College is part of a tour coordinated by Dr. Gerry Bouma, chair of the music department at Morningside College in Sioux City, IA. The tour includes performances at Morningside, Northwestern College (Orange City), the Sioux City public schools, and Sioux City’s First Presbyterian Church.
