Dordt College and St. Luke’s College Announce Expanded Collaboration

May 25, 2005

Officials at Dordt College and St Luke’s College today announced plans for the expansion of their current collaboration to prepare registered nurses and graduates in health sciences.

According to representatives of both colleges, the planned agreement is a natural enhancement of the existing, highly successful collaboration. The current program leads to a BA degree in health sciences at Dordt College following the attainment of an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing from St. Luke’s College. Both colleges are now looking to expand this program and make it available to additional students.

Mike Stiles, Chancellor of St Luke’s College notes that the colleges are well into the investigative stage for expanding their agreement “up to and including the establishment of a delivery point on the Dordt College campus." President Carl E. Zylstra of Dordt College adds, "This proposed expansion of our collaboration will allow even more students to complete their studies for the RN while spending their entire four years of education living on the Dordt College campus and enjoying the camaraderie of the Dordt College community."

Additionally Dordt College officials announced today that they have applied to the Iowa Board of Nursing for permission to offer an RN to BSN completion program on the Dordt College campus. According to Professor Pam Hulstein, Director of Health Services at Dordt College, "”These two new initiatives, once established, will enable a student to complete a BSN degree entirely on the Dordt campus.” Currently Briar Cliff University offers a degree completion program on the Dordt campus. “We have been very grateful for that cooperation,” says Hulstein, “but believe that the time has come for us to establish our own program. This program also will be open to registered nurses in the region who wish to complete their baccalaureate degree in nursing.”

If all agreements and approvals are granted as anticipated, students entering Dordt College in the fall of 2005 will be able to complete their entire course of study on the Dordt College campus. The ASN degree from St. Luke’s College gives eligibility for the RN licensure examination. The licensed RN will complete the BSN degree from Dordt College after four years. Hulstein notes that clinical experiences and instruction through St. Luke’s will continue to require travel to various sites throughout the Siouxland area but that more of the coursework will be offered at the Sioux Center campus of Dordt College.
