Dordt Jubilee Celebration Art Exhibit now on display

May 24, 2005

Six artists who are current or past art instructors at Dordt College have put together a gallery show at the Dordt Campus Center Art Gallery, on display May 19 through August 20. An art reception honoring participating artists will be held Friday, July 1, from 4-6 p.m. at the Campus Center Art Gallery. Alter

Featured in the show are Jo Alberda, Norm Matheis, Jacob Van Wyk, David Versluis, Susan Van Geest and Marilyn Wiedenaar. The show will include two-dimensional and three-dimensional art in a variety of media and techniques.

Before art majors were offered at Dordt, Jo Alberda taught art classes. Alberda continued teaching courses until her retirement in 2001. In addition to contributing to this show, Alberda will do a retrospective art exhibit at Dordt College this fall.

Art officially became a major at Dordt College in 1977, when Norm Matheis was hired to establish the program. Matheis was featured in a 2002 retrospective show at the Campus Center Art Gallery, and recently published the book “Witness,” featuring 30 of his paintings and accompanying text about heroes of faith by Dr. Sydney Hielema, Dordt College professor of theology.

Jacob Van Wyk, David Versluis and Susan Van Geest are all current professors of art at Dordt, where students pursuing an art degree at Dordt College have the opportunity to choose from four career tracks - fine arts studio, graphic design, art history or teaching art. All three have contributed to Dordt College’s growing permanent art collection, which will be showcased in an art walk Saturday, July 2, at 9:30 a.m., beginning at the Campus Center.

The public is invited to this free art exhibition, the reception July 1 from 4-6 p.m. and the art walk. The Campus Center Art Gallery is open every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. During the Jubilee celebration weekend July 1-3, art work will also be on display in the Classroom Complex Art Gallery. There is no cost to attend any of these Dordt Jubilee events.
