Dordt art majors claim 18 awards at show

Eleven Dordt College art students claimed 18 awards at the 41st annual Tri-State Art Show, held April 16 and 17 in the Forster Community Center in Rock Rapids.

Placing first overall and winner of the Judge’s Choice Award was Lindsey Shearer, a freshman with a graphic design emphasis from Monument, Colo. Shearer also claimed third place with a drawing exhibited in the show.

Placing first in the sculpture division was Becca Postma, a sophomore art major from Clara City, Minn. Postma also received honorable mention for a photo exhibited in the show.

Amber Boon, a senior with majors in both Art (graphic design) and English (literature) from Hull, claimed first and second place with two prints she entered in the show.

Laurel Alons, a junior with a graphic design emphasis from Sanborn, claimed first place for a painting, while Amanda Niewenhuis’ drawing claimed the second place overall prize.

Claiming first place in photography was Chad Postma, a senior with a graphic design emphasis from Sioux Center.

Sara Prins, a senior with a fine arts studio and art history emphasis from Lacombe, Alberta, Canada, placed second with a painting in the show and third with a photo entry, while Rob Haan, a sophomore with fine arts and graphic design emphases from Sioux Center, claimed second place for a photo submission.

Drawings by Elbert Bakker, a freshman with a graphic design emphasis from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, were awarded second place and honorable mention in that category.

Becky Wasko, a senior with a graphic design emphasis from Rolfe, Iowa, claimed third place with her print, while Brielle Houston received a third place and an honorable mention for her paintings. Houston is a junior with fine arts studio/art history emphases from Eugene, Ore.

Art work in the show was limited to two entries of original design per medium, completed within the past three years. Both amateurs and professionals were invited to submit two and three dimensional media. Judges for the show were Richard and Michele Benesh, award-winning photographers from Brodhead, Wisc.
