Purple Martin Writing Awards presented

Twenty-four Dordt College students were recognized for their writing ability in the annual Purple Martin Writing contest sponsored by the college's English department. Awards were presented on Tuesday, April 5.

The Purple Martin writing competition is held annually and is open to any Dordt student. Judges select winners from upperclassmen in the categories of fiction, poetry, personal writing, analysis, persuasion/argument, and exposition. Freshman work is placed in a separate division.

Cash prizes were awarded for first and second place. Students who received first place, second place or honorary mention were:

Personal Writing, upperclass: first place, Jason Bultje, Mason City, Iowa; second place, Rochelle Bloemendaal, Rock Rapids, Iowa; third place, Josh Bower, Aberdeen, S.D.; honorable mention, Andrew De Young, Bloomington, Minn., and Jason Elenbaas, Helena, Mont. Freshman: Katharine Hirt, Florissant, Mo.

Informal Exposition, upperclass: first place, Lindsey De Jong, Waukee, Iowa; second place, Melissa Drake, Griswold, Iowa. Freshmen: first place, Jeremiah Kats, Boise, Idaho; honorable mention, Mark Dykstra, Edmonton, AB, Canada; and Kimberly Deelstra, Shoreline, Wash.

Fiction (all grade levels) : first place, Andrew De Young, Bloomington, Minn.; second place, Amber Boon, Hull, Iowa; third place, Julie Ooms, Lansing, Ill.

Literary Analysis (all grade levels) : first place, Diana Hoogerhyde, Easton, Pa.; second place, Andrew De Young, Bloomington, Minn.; third place, Trent Van Bemmel, Doon, Iowa; honorable mention, Julie Ooms, Lansing, Ill.

Poetry (all grade levels): first place, Julie Perkins, Demotte, Ind.; second place, Andrew De Young, Bloomington, Minn.; third place, Sara Top, Maurice, Iowa; honorable mention, Nathan Terell, Rock Valley; Ross Feikema, Luverne, Minn., and Ann Andree, Wellandport, ON, Canada.

Research Paper (all grade levels): first place, Jennifer Alkema, Pugwash Junction, NS, Canada; second place, Ben Werkhoven, Monroe, Wash.; honorable mention, Rochelle Bloemendaal, Rock Rapids, Iowa.
