Award presented by state treasurer’s association

December 13, 2004

Certificates of Appreciation for Distinguished Service were presented to three Dordt College business administration students by the Iowa State County Treasurers Association recently. Treasurer's Award

Receiving recognition were Dena Wentz, a junior from Menno, S.D.; Matthew Dekoekkoek, a senior from Kalamazoo, MI; and Exposito Gigidlo, a senior from Ghana.

The certificates were awarded to thank the trio for input they provided in developing a marketing plan for the state’s on-line tax payment option.

Sioux County Treasurer, Robert Hagey, contacted both Dordt and Northwestern business departments to see if marketing classes might be interested in brainstorming for means of promoting the state’s website, which allows taxpayers to log on and pay property taxes and vehicle license renewals via credit card.

At Dordt, instructor Bernie Wiedenar arranged for three students to meet with Hagey in a typical consultation type setting. The consultation resulted in some excellent marketing ideas, for which the students involved were awarded both the state plaques and Pizza Ranch certificates to enjoy locally. Hagey said when he shared the marketing class’ suggestions at a state meeting, county treasurers from across the state were “very impressed.”

The Iowa State County Treasurers website has been functional since September, 2003, and has received both national and international awards. Here in Sioux County, nearly one million dollars was collected in the past year via the website.
