Local artists to sell work at Centre Mall

November 21, 2004

Art Sale

Artwork by more than 60 area artists will be available for purchase at the Centre Mall in Sioux Center Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 1-3, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 4, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Photography, ceramics, drawings, paintings and other forms of art will be offered at this Dordt College Art Sale, produced by students, alumni and faculty. Also offered will be pottery by Levi Yakubu, a Nigerian potter who demonstrated his work on Dordt’s campus recently.

“Our goal is to serve the larger community,” said Susan Van Geest, assistant professor of art at Dordt. “The sale is an important link between the college and Sioux Center, allowing us to share what we are doing in the art department and providing affordable original artwork for people’s homes.”

Van Geest said the growth of the art department in the past several years has made this type of public show possible. The art sale provides hands-on learning for the students, who have taken the responsibility of displaying the work, advertising and providing customer service. “This is an opportunity for students to both use their artistic gifts to serve the community and get the valuable learning experience of how to price their art work, how to market it with integrity and how to select the kind of work that has consumer appeal.” said Van Geest.
