Iowa academic deans meet at Dordt, Northwestern

September 13, 2004

A group of about 50 deans and academic officers representing independent colleges in the state of Iowa met at Dordt College on Thursday, Sept. 9, and the following day at Northwestern College, Orange City.

The group represents the membership of the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (IAICU). Deans meet annually, and this is the first time these Northwest Iowa colleges have co-hosted the event.

A reception and program were presented at DeYager Student Activities Center at Dordt College on Thursday evening, with a multimedia presentation by author and Dordt College English professor, James Schaap. A vespers service was led by Robert and April Hubbard, who are theater professors at Northwestern (Robert) and Dordt (April).

The Friday program was led by an administrative/faculty team from King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, which has received national recognition for a program in course-embedded assessment that enhances student learning. The team shared King’s College’s story and offered specific examples of course-embedded assessment from the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.
