Spiritual Autobiography is Dordt College Night Course

July 28, 2004

Adult learners interested in exploring the spiritual journeys of others and themselves are invited to enroll in an evening class at Dordt College this fall. Books

A Spiritual Autobiography class will be held Tuesday nights from 6:45-9:30 p.m., beginning Aug. 31 and running through the month of November. David Schelhaas, professor of English at Dordt College, will lead the class.

“Most of us struggle sometimes in our faith,” commented Schelhaas. The class will examine the struggles of six authors and how they came to know or return to God. Schelhaas said the bulk of the class will be discussion time, with background provided by lecture.

Participants will read and discuss books ranging from contemporary coming-to-faith stories to that of St. Augustine, written in 300 A.D. Discussion will focus on My God and Iby Lewis Smedes; The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton; Surprised by Joy by C. S. Lewis; The Sacred Journey by Frederick Buechner; Dakota by Kathleen Norris; and The Confessions of St. Augustine. Participants will also write vignettes about their own spiritual journeys.

Schelhaas anticipates that bringing together non-traditional students with younger students on campus will be mutually beneficial. “The older participants have deeper and richer life experience to draw upon, while younger students are more intensely questioning their faith and beliefs.”

Those interested in enrolling in the class should contact the registrar’s office (722-6030) by August 20 and request English 341: Spiritual Autobiography. Class size will be limited. The cost for attending the class may be covered by Dordt College’s adult learner incentive program, which allows non-degree adults who have not taken a college course in the past 10 years to take one class free. A half-price financial incentive to part-time students or senior citizen discount rates may also apply. Participants in this class will earn three college credits for the course.
