Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Master's (Biola Classic)

(Los Angeles, California) The Dordt College Defender volleyball team won its first match of the season with a 3-2 win over The Masterís (California) on Friday morning, August 22 in a match hosted by Biola in La Mirada, California.
The Defenders won sets one, three and five by scores of 25-20, 25-10 and 15-10 while the Mustangs took sets two and four by scores of 25-17 and 25-20.
The two teams traded early runs of points in set one with the Mustangs holding a 14-11 lead. Kayla Bartman started the run with a kill and Heather Showers followed that with a kill of her own. Back to back attack errors by The Masterís put Dordt ahead and Becci Madden finished the five point run with an ace serve. A Mustang kill narrowed the lead to 16-15 but The Masterís never got that close again in losing 25-20. Summer Jansenís ace serve finished the set for Dordt.
A seven point run in set two put the Mustangs in control as they went from tied 7-7 to a 14-7. Dordt rallied to cut the gap to 16-15 but California team had an answer with a three point run that propelled them to a 25-17 win.
Set three was all Dordt as the Defenders hit for a .414 kill efficiency while The Masterís was in negative territory with a -.107. The Defenders were never tested in winning 25-10. The Defenders missed their opportunity to put the match away when the surrendered a three point run midway through the fourth set. After a 13-13 tie the Mustangs got up 16-13. Dordt rallied to get within one on several occasions, the final time at 19-18. The Masterís scored six of the next eight points to win 25-20.
In the decisive fifth set the Defenders scored back to back points to go from down 3-2 to up 4-3 and never trailed again, getting ahead 10-7 on a kill by Bartman. A Mustang attack error and a Brooke Wolterstorff kill got Dordt up 12-8 and the Defenders finished the 15-10 win on a Wolterstorff kill.
Wolterstorff led the Dordt attack with 19 kills and a.311 kill efficiency. Heather Showers and Elizabeth Kiel each had eight kills and Bartman had 28 assists with four kills. Meghan Krausman had two service aces and eight digs while Wolterstorff led the team with 13 digs and Bartman had 11.
Dordt totaled 51 kills and 59 digs and limited The Masterís to .117 kill efficiency.
Dordt is 1-2 this season.
