Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Wayland Baptist-NAIA National Championship Elimination Round

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College volleyball season came to an end in the first round of elimination play at the 2013 NAIA Volleyball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa. The Defenders lost to Wayland Baptist (Texas) in a 3-1 match Friday morning, December 6. Wayland Baptist advances to the quarterfinal round to face The Master’s (California).
Dordt started slowly as the Pioneers built an early lead and hold on to win in set oe 25-19. Dordt never made a serious push late, getting as close as 21-18 and 22-19.
Set two looked like more of the same as the Defenders struggled to match Wayland Baptists attack with Shahala Hawkins and Grecia Rivera. Dordt got down 19-11 before starting a string of points on a Lindsey Floen kill. The Defenders added there more to the string with Meghan Krausman getting two kills in the run. Dordt eventually tied it at 22-22 on an attack error by the Pioneers and Brooke Wolterstorff put the Defenders up 23-22. Wayland Baptist answered with a kill by Hawkins and Dordt had an answer in the form of a Jenna Horstman kill. Dordt served for the win but Hawkins had the first of two kills in a row and a hitting error by the Defenders ended it at 26-24, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
Dordt forced set four with a 25-20 in set three as they pulled away from a 14-14 tie with Krausman recording a kill and Elizabeth Kiel had back to back kills to make it 17-14. The Pioneers were never able to work back to tie it and the match moved to set four.
Dordt grabbed the lead in set for on five points in a row to go up 6-3. Dordt maintained the lead to 15-11 before Wayland Baptist started its comeback. The Sooner Athletic Conference member scored three points in a row before an attack error put the Defenders up 16-14. The Pioneers eventually tied it at 19-19 and took the lead for good on an attack error by Dordt. Dordt did tie it at 21-21 on a Horstman kill but back to back points put Wayland ahead for good and they won it on a kill by Hawkins for the 25-23 final.
Dordt had 62 kills and hit for a .202 kill efficiency with 60 assists and 68 digs. Wayland Baptist knocked down 59 kills and had a .279 kill efficiency with 56 assists and 70 digs.
Dordt was led by Wolterstorff with 22 kills against five errors and 49 total attacks. She also had 12 digs in the loss and two service aces. Krausman had 11 kills and seven digs and Floen and Horstman both had 10 kills. Kiel added five kills and Kayla Gesink had 56 assists and four kills. Kayla Broekhuis had 21 digs while Siri Nelson had 12.
“We have no regrets,” said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson after the match. “We had opportunities and we played well.”
Wayland Baptist was topped by Hawkins with 23 kills while Chelsey Driskill and Rivera each had 12.
Dordt concludes its season with a 25-9 mark and went 3-2 in play at the 2013 NAIA Volleyball National Championship.
