Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Indiana Wesleyan--NAIA National Championship Pool Play

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College volleyball tea earned a 3-1 win over Indiana Wesleyan in pool play at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa on Thursday night. The win advanced the Defenders to the single elimination portion of the event to be played on Friday morning and afternoon.
Dordt scored three points in a row after falling behind 3-1 to start the match and took a lead they never gave up. The Wildcats tied it on five different occasions but never took the lead with Dordt getting up 18-12, only to see the Crossroads League member cut the different to 18-15. A Wildcat service error stopped the run and the Defenders went on to win 25-20.
Set two featured six ties to 10-10 before the Defenders scored seven points in a row with Siri Nelson finishing the run with a service ace. Four points by Indiana Wesleyan cut the gap to 17-15 and a Brooke Wolterstorff kill made it 18-15. Wesleyan got as close as two one more time and Dordt went on to win 25-19.
Set three saw Wesleyan pull away from a 18-18 tie after Brooke Wolterstorff had tied it. Three points in a row by the Wildcats put the Defenders in a hole they wouldn’t climb out of the Dordt lost 25-20.
The two teams saved the most entertaining volleyball for set four. Neither team led by more than four with Dordt trailing most of the way. Dordt tied it at 6-6 and lead briefly after an Elizabeth Kiel kill at 7-6. Wesleyan tied it at 7-7 and took the lead on the next point. Dordt tied it at eight and nine but never took the lead. Indiana Wesleyan took the lead at 15-11 and looked like it might run away but the Defenders again fought back for a 15-15 tie with Kayla Gesink recording a service ace.
Wesleyan regained a two point lead and was up 18-16 before kills by Kiel and Meghan Krausman tied it. The teams were tied at 19, 20 and 21 before Dordt took the lead on a net violation for a 22-21 lead. It was tied at 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26 with Dordt finally putting the game away with a Krausman kill followed by a block put up by Gesink and Lindsey Floen for the 28-26 final.
Dordt hit for a .232 kill efficiency and had three points on service aces and 76 digs and seven blocks. Indiana Wesleyan had a .196 kill efficiency with four service aces and 72 digs with seven blocks as well. Dordt had 59 kills to 55 for Indiana Wesleyan.
Krausman had a team high 14 kills and Jenna Horstman had 13 while Wolterstorff put down 12. Floen recorded nine kills and Kiel had eight. Gesink put up 51 assists and had 15 digs with three kills and a service ace. Kayla Broekhuis had a team high 21 digs.
Indiana Wesleyan’s Rae Brandes put down 16 kills and Kristine Egebrecht had 12 with Katey Holler lofting 45 assists. Rebecca Brandes got credit for 25 digs.
Dordt advances to the single elimination portion of the event and will face Wayland Baptist at 10:00 Friday morning. The winner faces The Master’s at 5:45 in the quarterfinal round.
Dordt is 25-8 this season and advance out of pool play at the event for the first time since 2003. Indiana Wesleyan ends its season with a 30-12 mark.
