Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Lindsey Wilson--NAIA National Championship Pool Play

(Sioux City, Iowa) Dordt College survived day one of pool play at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship with a 3-2 match win over no. 10 rated Lindsey Wilson (Kentucky).
The Defenders established themselves early with a 25-18 win in set one, trailing just once in the set with that deficit coming at 1-0. Dordt held a 14-8 lead after Jenna Horstman knocked a kill down and the Defenders got up 22-15 after a service error and an attack error by Lindsey Wilson on consecutive plays. The Blue Raiders got no closer than five the rest of the set and fell behind 1-0 in the match.
Set two found the Mid-South Conference regular season champions up 7-2 after a Sarah Anderson kill but the Defenders rallied for five straight points, the last two coming via hitting errors by Andy Cavin’s team. The set was tied 8-8 and again at 13-13, 14-14, 15-15, 16-16 and 17-17 before Dordt took the lead for good on a service error by the Raiders and a service ace by Kayla Broekhuis. Dordt closed the set by scoring eight of the final 11 points to take a 2-0 match lead.
Lindsey Wilson started to turn the tide with a come from behind win in set three. Lindsey Wilson got out to an 8-4 lead in the set only to have Meghan Krausman start a string of six out of seven points scored by Dordt with a kill. Dordt got the lead to 10-9 and the two teams were deadlocked at every point from nine to 16. Dordt battled back from an 18-16 deficit to tie it at 19-19 with a block but the Raiders had enough to finish and won 25-21.
Set four followed much the same pattern with Dordt leading early this time. The Kentucky based school got back to even at 10-10 and it was tied at 12-12 and 13-13. Dordt seemed to take control with a Jenna Horstman kill at 14-13 and back to back attack errors by the Raiders gave Dordt a 16-13 lead. Three straight points by Lindsey Wilson tied it but Elizabeth Kiel had an answer to put Dordt up 17-16—it was the last time Dordt would score. Lindsey Wilson tore off the next nine points and won 25-17, scoring two points on aces and another five on kills. Dordt was charged with one ball handling error and another attack error in the string to account for the nine points.
With the pivotal match hanging in the balance, the Defenders took the lead in set five on a serving error and a Horstman kill. Two points by Lindsey Wilson tied it but the Defenders took the lead for good on a Horstman kill followed by a Wolterstorff kill and block. By the time the run was over Dordt had a 7-2 lead and Lindsey Wilson got no closer than three at 10-7 before the Defenders ran off the final five points for the win. Lindsey Floen had two kills to finish the run and Meghan Krausman and Kayla Gesink each had kills as well.
Dordt is 24-7 after the win and will face Biola (California) on Wednesday night at 5:45 in day two of the Championship. Biola beat Indiana Wesleyan 3-1 to improve to 23-3. Lindsey Wilson will play Indiana Wesleyan in the other pool play match in Pool C.
Dordt hit for a .296 kill efficiency and was led by Brooke Wolterstorff’s 17 kills and Jenna Horstman’s 14. Lindsey Floen added ten and Kayla Gesink put down nine kills and had 46 assists with eight digs. Kayla Broekhuis led the team with 25 digs and had an ace serve while Wolterstorff had four service aces. Dordt totaled eight aces in the win and ad 63 digs and eight points on blocks.
Lindsey Wilson got 18 kills by Kaylie Moorhead and 16 by Nadalina Nesheva. Alexa Just put up 50 assists and Kirsten King had 25 digs. Lindsey Wilson hit for a team kill efficiency of .242.
