Dordt College Women's Volleyball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College won a 3-1 volleyball decision over the Briar Cliff Chargers in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night in Sioux Center. The Defenders improved to 9-3 in the GPAC and 18-5 overall with the win and got the Defenders back on the winning track after losing to Hastings on Saturday.
Dordt took control of set one near the end of the contest as they scored back to back points on a pair of Briar Cliff errors to go from up 19-17 to up 21-17. A Meghan Krausman kill won it for Dordt in a set that featured four ties. Dordt won the set 25-22.
Set two had the Chargers up 15-11 before six points in a row with Jocelyn Bousema serving put the Defenders up to stay at 17-15. A block by the Defenders got them to set point and Jenna Horstman finished it at 25-20 with a kill to win a set that had the teams tied 12 times.
The Chargers fought back to take the early lead in set three, getting up by as many as seven at 13-6. The hosts hung around long enough to give themselves a chance as they narrowed the gap to 16-15 after a Briar Cliff error. Dordt eventually tied it at 16-16 and Bousema served an ace that put Dordt up 17-16. The teams were tied at 18, 19, 20 and 23 before an attack error by the Chargers put the Defenders at set and match point. An extended volley resulted in Dordt surrendering a point to tie it at 24 and Briar Cliff scored the next two points with Erin Frank getting a dump shot to win it 26-24.
Set four capped the entertaining night with a total of 15 ties, the final deadlock at 17-17. Dordt scored back to back points to lead 19-17, registering the second point on a Meghan Krausman kill. A Brooke Maguire kill slowed the momentum momentarily, but another pair of back to back points made it 21-18 and Dordt went on to win it 25-20. Jenna Horstman recorded a kill to win it after Brooke Wolterstorff knocked down her 14th kill to get the Defenders to match point.
Horstman ended with a team high 15 kills against just two errors. Wolterstorff added her 14 and Lindsey Floen knocked down 11. Elizabeth Kiel had 10 and was in on five total blocks. Kayla Gesink put up 53 assists and Kayla Broekhuis had 28 digs. Dordt hit .347 for the match and had 69 digs to go with nine points on blocks.
Briar Cliff’s Breanna Nogelmeier led all players with 16 kills and Maguire had 13. Erin Frank had 53 assists and Amy Frank got to 25 digs.
Briar Cliff slips to 5-7 in the GPAC and 16-11 overall. Dordt improves to 9-3 and 18-5 and is ranked no. 18 in the Tachikara-NAIA National Poll released late Tuesday. Dordt will host Concordia on Saturday in the final home regular season volleyball match of the season. Dordt will conclude the season with three road tests.
